Students
may begin studying classical ballet at the Sacramento Academy of Dance
as early as age four.
The director's approach is to make the school an exciting and fun place
for children, their world apart, where ballerinas are lovely and well
mannered, but work diligently to please the teacher, who will be
delighted with their efforts.
Class begins with carefully chosen exercises for strength
and stretch, where the work is designed to stimulate their imagination
as well.
They laugh and become familiar with all their classmates,
who will become special friends. The class progresses to the
ballet barre, where the children learn positions of the
feet and a few beginning ballet exercises, using the
traditional French terminology.
Next, we go to the center
floor and learn the correct positions of the arms and
fingers, jumps, turns and basic center steps. We then
have fun learning a series of short dance
routines, using
rhythm and props.
The class finishes with
acrobatics, such as splits, backbends, somersaults and cartwheels.
Each child sits like a little lady as they
wait for their turn, and then all bow to the teacher with
a thank you.
The children are then off to
the real world, looking forward to the next class, while dreaming of becoming beautiful ballerinas.
